DEATH OF MR. ROBERT BOWERMAN. At the age of 67 years, Mr. Robert Bowerman, a very well known and much respected inhabitant of Carlingford, died on Friday, May 28, in an awfully sudden manner. Mr. Bowerman bad been playing cards with his wife and family, and did not seem to be particularly unwell, until about 9 o'clook, p.m. Shortly after that hour, his wife's attention was attracted by a noise in his room, and she rushed, with other members of the family, to his bedside, just in time to see him die. The death, though terribly sudden, was not, however, without warning, as Mr. Bowerman had been attended by Dr. Bowman for heart disease; an inquest was therefore dispensed with. Mr. Bowman was an orchardist, and had been for about 40 years resident in the district. He leaves a widow and a family of grown-up sons and daughters, who are settled in the locality. The funeral took place at the Carlingford Cemetery, the arrangements being in the hands of Messrs. Metcalfe and Wilkinson; and, despite the inclemency of the weather, a large number of the leading residents assembled to pay their last sad tribute of respect to the deceased. In the absence of the Rev. G. McIntosh, Mr. W. J. Stephenson officiated, the coffin being first taken into St. Paul's Church, and subsequently to the grave, where the choir sang an appropriate hymn. In the mourning coach following the hearse were the widow and members of the family, and a long line of vehicles and pedestrians came behind, amongst whom were Mr. P. Hockley, Alderman Franks, Alderman Eyles, Messrs. Sonter, R. Wilkinson, senr. G. Wilkinson, senr., J. Wilkinson, G. Franks, junr., J. Bowerman, J. Bowerman, junr., T. Bowerman, and the Messrs. Catt, the members of the Carlingford C.C., and many others. Some beautiful wreaths were laid on the coffin, amongst which was one sent by the Carlingford Cricket Club, of which the deceased was a strong supporter. The coffin bore the inscription "Robert Bowerman, died May 29th 1897, aged 67 years." Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers Advocate (Parramatta, NSW : 1888 - 1950), Saturday 5 June 1897. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/85770445 DEATH OF A CARLINGFORD PIONEER. Mr. Robert Bowerman. In the sudden death of Mr. Robert Bowerman, an orchardist of Carlingford for the past thirty years, the district has sustained the loss of a respected pioneer, many of whose children have already made homes for themselves in the Hills country in and about the present Municipality of Dundas. Mr. Bowerman, who was in his 68th year, was in fairly good health up to Friday night last. About 9 p.m. be retired to bed, and about half-an-hour afterwards his wife heard a gurgling sound. She tried to arouse him, but, getting no answer, became alarmed and called in her daughter. The two ladies lifted him up and he expired in their arms within five minutes. Dr. Bowman was sent for, but Mr. Bowerman was dead long before that gentleman received the message. The deceased had been treated by Dr. Bowman for heart disease - though he had not been under the doctor's regular care of late - and death was due to that malady. The deceased leaves several sons and daughters, most of whom are settled in homes of their own in the neighbourhood. The funeral on Sunday was one of the largest ever seen in Carlingford. In the absence of the Rev. G. McIntosh, Mr. W. J. Stephenson, of Parramatta, read the funeral service. The body was first borne into St. Paul's Church where the earlier portion of the service was read. The procession then reformed and proceeded to the Carlingford C.E. Cemetery where the interment took place. The pall-bearers were Messrs. James Bowerman, E. J. Black, Alderman Franks and J. Catt. Some very handsome wreaths were sent, a very pretty one being sent by the Carlingford C.C., of which deceased was a great admirer. The following ladies and gentlemen sent wreaths and crosses: - Mrs. R. Sonter (sister), Mrs. W. Sonter (sister), Misses Cater, Miss Ellison, Miss Bradbury, Miss Martin, Mrs. J. Bellamy, Mr. and Mrs. G. Franks, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Bowermnn (son and daughter-in-law), Mrs. Tebbutt, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Cochrane (daughter), Mrs. Williams (daughter), Mrs. W. Catt (daughter), Mrs. S. Shields (daughter), Miss Ray, Mrs. J. Powell, Mrs. F. Martin and Mrs. Birkett. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. Metcalfe and Wilkinson.
