An elderly man named Richard Bowerman expired suddenly while walking into Parramatta from Carlingford on Saturday morning last. Shortly after leaving home, and when passing Mrs. Luke's, he was observed to totter and fall; and, although a man named Harradine (in Mrs. Luke's service as coachman) immediately ran to his assis-tance, Bowerman was dying when he arrived, and died before he could be carried to the roadside. The deceased was well known throughout the district, and was one of the oldest residents of the locality, having been born at Pen-nant Hills in 1824. An inquest was held on Saturday afternoon with the following result: - Frederick Henry Bowerman, laborer, residing at Parramatta, identified the body as that of his father, Richard Bowerman, laborer, 67 years of age; deceased had generally enjoyed good health, but for several weeks past had complained of a pain in his side; he (witness) and deceased were that morn-ing getting wood in William Cox's bush; deceased had cut the wood on the previous evening; they loaded the cart with dry wood with green wood on top; witness left deceased at the top of the lane; he was then going home to breakfast; did not see him again alive; witness drove on to Parramatta and shortly afterwards his sister came into town from Carlingford and told him his father was dead on the road; went back and found deceased lying on the side of the road near Hackett's quarry, he having been removed there from the road; he was quite dead; two of deceased's brothers had died from heart disease. Elizabeth Amelia Bowerman deposed she was deceased's daughter and resided with him at Carlingford; that morning deceased came home from work to his breakfast, he ate a hearty meal and left again between 9 and 9-30 a.m. to go into Parramatta; about half an hour afterwards she heard he was dead on the road; she put the horse in the cart; went out and found her father lying on the bank at the side of the road near the quarry; went on to Parramatta and informed her brother; her father had not complained of illness lately. Charles Harradine, coachman in the service of Mrs. Luke, deposed that shortly before 10 o'clock that morning he noticed the deceased walking down the Pennant Hills Road towards Parra-matta; then saw him fall forward on to his face; he was then about 100 yards from Mrs. Luke's gate, and in the middle of the road; ran to him and noticed he was dead or dying; with assistance removed him to the side of road; he gave two gasps and then expired; witness stopped by the body till Frederick Bowerman arrived from Parramatta. Dr. Garrett deposed that from the appearances presented by the body and the evidence of the witnesses called he was of opinion that deceased died from syncope or failure of the heart's action, arising from natural causes. The jury returned a verdict to the effect that deceased died from natural causes - to wit, disease of the heart.
