John Arthur served his apprenticeship as a carpenter in England. Built some very large churches in England. In Australia having settled at South West Rocks John assisted in the building of a ship named 'Rainbow', for a Mr Cochrane. John was also a carpenter on board the dredge 'Fitzroy' under Captain Rollson. Traveled to Sydney aboard the 'Fitzjames' with his brother William.
